Have you ever felt stuck? Jammed up? Not creative? Stressed to a point where you feel confused?
I have been there...
Sometimes the plate gets so full that you can't focus...your mind is like a missile looking for a target..
Since there is no focus present... and your heart rate is elevated... blood pressure up slightly... the brain is confused..
It becomes very difficult to stop this pattern unless the main stressor is removed...
Ok- what do I mean...
Let's say you have a deadline approaching rapidly for you to get a project complete... and, you are also in the process of launching your own business... and you have to set up an event for your team....
Those 3 "projects" are all important.. but unless you give priority to one, the brain is confused and you will get the physiological response of "no focus, the feeling of amped, and the jitters" because you have no target..
We as humans are really not good at multi-tasking....
That means the best formula always is to focus on what you do best, then delegate, hire, and outsource everything else...
But until you have the team that can help you.. it is all on you...
So in order to get through what should be an acute situation... we must use our BREATH as a regulatory tool.
Breathing can either speed you up or slow you down based on the pattern...
We all know long, drawn out breaths are the answer to creating calm....
While fast aggressive breaths are the fastest way to speeding up...
In sports, before a big play, or at-bat, you will see players typically take one, long deep and powerful breath.. as if they are expiring all their stress in one FOCUS BREATH...
We need to do the same to overcome the CONFUSION LOOP that is caused by too much on our plate....
This can happen using a few different breathing patterns...
4-4-4 is a tempo breathing pattern to combat stress.... 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out..... do this 10-15 times.....
4-0-10 is a more difficult and slower pattern to combat stress and fatigue.. 4 seconds in, 0 hold, and 4 seconds out.. do this 10-15 times...
1-0-1 is a rapid breathing pattern, best in the AM when you are feeling tired and sluggish or mid day.. 1 second in, 0 hold, and a forceful 1 second out....
In life... do not just assume you are breathing....
You may be taking breaths that are so shallow that you are actually about to burst...
Stress can do this..
Crazy schedules can do this...
Fear can do this...
Those who hold their breath are most likely to have a gut, have high blood pressure, and are set up for must higher health risks...
It is as if they are suffering from a systemic elevation of fight/flight hormones and are ready to be chased at any time...
This is not the breeding ground of optimal health, thought clarity, and creative success...
This is the breeding ground of burn-out, fatigue, panic attacks, and dangerous levels of anxiety...
Chill out....
Breath it out...
Catch yourself in the moment holding your breath...
That is being present...
Focus on that...
It is where the WINS are!
