Hey Team..
Yesterday, I was doing a coaching call this a client who was looking for more output out of his team....
What we quickly found out, was that his energy was being drained... making leadership a difficult task....
I always say.. in business, there are IPAs (income producing activities) and EDAs (energy draining activities).....
But today, I wanted to introduce the concept of IPPs (income producing people) and EDPs (energy draining people)...
For those who have managed sports teams, you know those players that are just a lot of work... and never seem to get it done....
Those would be your EDPs in business....
Then, there are those players who always seem to get it done...
No flash... no "look at me"...
Just always getting it done in the big moments....
Those are your IPPs.
Simple distinctions.
Well Coach, "What do I do if I have EDP's on my team?
You must act quickly....
Asking a few key questions:
1. Can they be trained?/ Are they Coachable?
2. Do they fit in with the Team/Company Culture?
3. Are they team-players looking to Serve the Company and the Leader? Meaning.. are they taking more off of the plate of leadership, or stacking more on the plate of leadership?
If they are Coachable and some more training will turn them to an IPP, keep them.
If they do not fit the Team/Company Culture, they must go.
If they are not team players, only looking to serve themselves with no consideration of the team--looking to "take" rather than give.. they must go.
You see, most leaders are struggling to find time...
The last thing a leader needs is somebody that is draining their more precious resource: energy.
The reality is this: Some people are just not a fit....
Some people are hired that should not be.
Some people could be great workers, but are just not a fit for YOUR team.
Some people are great people, but just not a fit for YOUR team.
It is ok.
The best part of sports is that if players do not perform, they are sent packing to another team or re-assigned to a lower level for more development.
You can do the same if you run a team or Organization...
You have to always be protecting your team, your culture, and standards/ expectations you have set.....
It is your job as the leader to make sure everybody on the team is pacing correctly...
Let's GO.
Chase Greatness.
