Hi Team...
Today I wrote a post on LinkedIn that I wanted to share with you..
I wrote it because I was working to understand WHY some people can use emotion positively and why for others- that emotion can hijack them.
It comes down to "how" you associate your emotions.
Are you associating them with positive outcomes or negative outcomes?
Anyway, here is the post:
Why do some people get ahead based on their emotions and others fall behind?
It has to do with a phenomenon known as: Interference.
That amazing family vacation you had- why did you remember that and not other things?
Or, that horrible Christmas dinner back in 97 where Aunt Mary lost her mind and stormed out..
Your first public speech and that rush it gave you...
Perhaps it was that time when you did your first $1m deal...
We remember our highest emotions...
Interference is a concept that says our strongest thoughts win and our strongest memories win as they are always jockeying for position..
Why do I write this?
Because it is often our memories of an event that thrust us forward or hold us back...
If we had a bad experience- and felt totally rejected and demoralized, taking that action again may not be something we do with 100% zest and fire- so, there is a cost.
ACTION: The key to "memory-override" is to do more things that have higher emotional links...
Meaning, don't go for what is small and easy, go for what is big, challenging, and thrilling.
If you do that enough times and start to stack wins, you will be able to create a new positive link of thrilling emotion and victory.
This the "high" that most talk about around doing deals, getting large deals done, and the acclaim that comes with it.
Here is the deal though, one of our most dominant emotions is fear- and if you let it slide to the negative side of the scale- it will be the dominant emotion with the highest cost.
This is a long way of saying: GET OUT THERE AND MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Go towards your highest emotions and the highest stakes.
Playing it safe all the time holds a part of you hostage- and that hostage is looking for his/her moment of release.
Today, I am giving you the keys to free yourself.
