Yesterday I did a webinar for a group of Champion Business leaders...
There is more confusion today around leadership than ever before- and, there are more resources available than ever before..
Think about how many books on leadership most have in their homes- probably at least a few.
What I mentioned yesterday was that many of these books are the same or very similar.
They have a very gentle, soft message.
I disagree with this message unless it is naturally who you are...
And here is WHY.
There was a great social experiment we all got to watch and be a part of over the last few years...
We were told what we CAN do and what we CAN'T do by individuals in positions of "AUTHORITY".
"Wear your mask."
"Get your vaccine."
"Stay 6-feet apart."
Do this. Do that.
And what did the majority of people do?
They did what they were told.
PEOPLE WANT TO BE TOLD WHAT TO DO.
Most people crave safety, security, and authority.
That is how most of us are raised- in a system of this starting in the home then in formalized education, and for some it continues in their work environment (Because great leadership realizes this is necessary)...
Most will never say they want to be told what to do, but they do.
This is what leaders need to do more of.
It is not micromanagement- it is giving clear direction.
It is giving clear marching orders.
It is letting your people know EXACTLY what you want and expect.
Leaders need to get in the habit of being more direct.
Leave less open for interpretation.
Your leaders who do not want to be told what to do will show themselves- they will be your managers, your executives- but even they may show a need for direction.
With clear direction comes calm for most people.
The clear direction is clarity- which allows for greater confidence and conviction as it relates to how somebody attacks their role.
Get in the habit.
