Last week I was invited to speak with a high level CEO in downtown Manhattan. George is from Australia and is working with a Leadership Company to improve his overall leadership, management, and personal "care" skills.
So, through the graces of LINKEDIN I got a call from the Agency he is working with to see if I would spend 60 minutes with him, sharing some of my strategies of performance enhancement so he can bring and use back in the Land Down Under.
After battling the UN Conference traffic I finally arrived at Laconda Verde, a Tribeca hotspot to meet with George.
I was met with an outpouring of great questions, but there is one in particular I wanted to mention today:
HOW DO I MANAGE IT ALL?
Mentioning the greats like Jeter, Rivera, and Company.. I said, "THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM...TRYING TO MANAGE IT ALL."
You see, the greatest in the World may start by trying to manage it all, but soon realize this is impossible. So, as a result they stop.
They begin to simplify, delegate, and oversee.
The top pros I know in sports, business, and entertainment actually have a life that is more simple than the blue collar worker or the 9-5 desk jockey.
They stop looking and spending time outside the box and instead focus on what is inside of it.
WHAT DO I MEAN?
I gave George a strategy that I call the BOX STRATEGY.
It starts by asking George, "What are you great at? What do you love to do? What comes easy for you?" --- Write that down on a piece of paper and draw a BOX around it.
Next, I ask, "What drains you? What takes most of your time? What do you struggle with? What do you feel takes away from you being great?"--- Write that outside of the box.
What is written INSIDE the BOX is all you will focus on from now on. You will look at all of those items outside of the box and delegate to others. (preferably to those who have done the box drill and have those items INSIDE their box).
We are masters and wasting time, draining our own account and mental reserves because what comes easy.. we often times question.
It comes easy because that is where your talent shines and your ability lies.
Derek Jeter did not try to hit homeruns because that was not his game. He became great hitting clutch singles and doubles.
You need to do the same. You can use the BOX STRATEGY at home, work, or in anything you are involved. It will help you to stay focused, increase production, and be more effective at assigning roles/ tasks to others.
Applying this to all aspects of your life will FREE YOU UP and give more time to just ENJOY your life.
You do not need to be great at everything.. just what you are great at :)
