Hi Team... 

Happy Monday! 

After taking a nice road trip up the coast to New York- I can tell you that I appreciate windshield time.

You know, that time when you get to count your miles, see if you can actually make it to the target you are after in "record" time as you balance your speed, along with the speed limit as you slowly creep over the speed limit... :)

Well, by the time I hit North Carolina, I had some surefire ideas hit me for this weeks blogs/ writings...

And today, I wanted to pick up where I left off on Friday... which was the message:

IT IS NOT WHAT YOUR TEAM COULD DO FOR YOU, IT IS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR TEAM.

Coach, we already heard that message!

Yes- you have.

But, I gave it some more thought after an email from my amazing client, Tim.

For those of us who have run teams and companies, we all know how much we love our people, but, we also know how they can really piss us off.

Let me walk you through the entrepreneurs/ CEOs journey...

  1. You hire somebody who shows great promise....
  2. Great excitement...
  3. They are really unbelievable when they start...
  4. Then, each passing day they get more and more comfortable.. 
  5. Sometimes, they begin to let the little things go...
  6. Then, the Leader needs to have a sit-down to get back to where things were..
  7. That person gives a few reasons "why"... then, they tell the Leader what they "need" in order to perform and be happy...
  8. So, like a great Leader, the Leader begins to think about it and makes the investment in this persons growth and development...

And then it happens... THE TEXT OR EMAIL...

"Are you around tomorrow?

OR, "Do you have some time to talk?"

It is in this moment that the Leader says to themselves: Here we go again...

This email/text sets up the classic "It's not you- it's me speech" in which the employee puts in their two weeks....

SO, I wanted to tell all the Leaders out there- I get it. I get you.

I understand how much it sucks to give, give, give while some take, take, take...

Leaders are often emotional.

They take things personal.

They really do care about their people and company at a core level...

It is these moments, mentioned above that create jaded, numb, Leaders.

You can see "WHY", RIGHT?

It sucks to give all the time and feel like you are getting no love back...

It really does.

But, I want to tell you this Leaders: Keep going.

Realize that your people are dynamic, not static.

Not many will stay forever.

Do not expect them to.

Demand excellence from them while they are with you...

Invest in them while they are with you...

Lead them, coach them, develop them while they are with you...

And when the time comes that they send the text or email... thank them for their service and begin "investing" in your next up and coming blue-chip stock...

These are the rules of the leadership game...

And remember, they are leaving because THEY want to leave... (or because you told them to)...

But, it is not your fault- it is their choice.

Keep being great.

Keep showing up and creating the best experience as possible for your people.

As a result- you will never live in doubt.

You gave it your best- and that is all you can do.

Be your best.

That is how you become a Champion-Leader.

And one last thing- don't discount yourself and feel like you have to take abuse from your people. 

Respect must be at the foundation of the success period of any great Team.
