Hi Team...
This past week I have found a common theme amongst many of the Leaders I work with... ready?
They can not stop working.
Their natural default is to go back to work...
For some, it gets so bad that they prefer work over fun....
Work over family...
Probably because they have forgot how to have fun or how to enjoy the simple gifts of family..
Why?
Well.. they are driven by results...
They validate themselves based on their results...
If work is good- they are good.
If work is bad- they are bad.
This is super dangerous..
How do we correct this work-obsession and the negative effects of it?
When we can do these two things- we begin living again and thriving again....
A few weeks ago, I was speaking with Private Equity Managing Partner, Peter Moore and he said, " Coach, I did not even know there were still birds outside. I have been running for so long that I had not seen or heard a bird for years prior to this quarantine."
This is real.
SO true for many.
They are so locked in on their work that they forget about their life...
Don't make work and life the same thing.....
Now, how do we do the above.
First, we have to have a time that we start work and a time that we conclude.
A clear open and a clear close.
You pick the hours.
This will give you more personal time and time to rest, recover, socialize, and disconnect.
As a result- you will be able to focus on the YOU part of your life.
You know, not the work, or the leader, or the employee, or the owner- but the personal side of you.
With this extra time you can read, write, play music, dine with family, call your parents, go for a walk, or just hang-out (hopefully without your phone)...
This is very important time.
It can only happen when you honor the fact that you are not your work...
You are not the results of your work...
They are two separate things!
Got it?
I know, I am repeating myself but I want this concept to land with you!
Never let your work determine WHO you are...
You are you and your work is your work.
Is there some crossover- yes.
But, this message is about strategic separation and is meant to hit the high achieving, work 24-7 mindset right in the gut.
I remember back in 2007 I had a talk with the legendary Roger Clemens...
He told me, "D- Pitching is what I do but it is not who I am"....
Powerful.
I never forgot it.
I want you to remember these lessons as well!
Let's GO!
Your Coach,
COACH DANA CAVALEA
**Earlier this week, on The Becoming A Champion Show, I interviewed actor and writer Rich Graff.
It was a great show with some powerful lessons about Being Yourself. Nothing is better than Original work! Click here to watch.
