As I travel throuhout the country and tend to my social media platforms, I have seen a common theme: Actors, Actresses, and Models calling themselves trainers. The interesting part about this is that people are actually buying and doing their programs. These folks are bringing the same bravado and on-screen showmanship the their training venture and actually having success. This is showing the American consumer is no longer focused on quality, solely the "sold" result. Now at ML Strength we are all about getting the "inactive" to be active- but at what cost.
What is happening here is that the true Pros of the field are being overlooked and challenged to adjust to the current market tactics for survival. Since this field has very little regulation, if any, it creates an open platform for many to rise and use this truly wonderful field of "performance training" as a platform to showcase themselves. This field was always about others. Now, we are seeing many more doing it for themselves rather than those they serve.
For those folks that are looking to hire a Pro for the first time, find somebody that has a resume, a degree, a background, and continues to invest in their academic education as well as their practical. Stay away from instructors that are spending more time speaking about their weekend plans than about your process, progression, results, and movement. Remember- the core of every Coach and Trainer should be a motivating educator. Lets not forget the vintage Jack Lalanne- a true gentleman, leader, innovator, motivator, and educator. Why did people fall in love with Jack? He had passion for his craft and had a vision for those around him and those he touched to get truly healthy.
Many great Coaches and programs today go overlooked because these truly special people are not able to market themselves as well as the other Hollywood types. So, buyer beware. Lets not forget this one fact: we are working with the human body- a truly complicated machine that has incredible power when trained and used properly. Don't just hire somebdy to make you sweat. Don't just hire somebody that "kills" you for an hour. Anybody can do that. Find somebody that truly cares about your process, growth, and well-being. Get trained by a Pro.
