What is Physical Therapy?
Why is it becoming so expensive whenever I go?
Doesn't insurance cover this?
Wait.. I am confused..
Physical Therapy is covered by insurance but my Personalized Training is not..
I want to give you the scoop on Physical Therapy..
Most "insurance" based Physical Therapy is driven by those insurance companies..
What do I mean?
Well.. now many co-pays for physical therapy are upwards of $50.. and for that $50.. what do you get?
15 minutes- HEAT
15 minutes- HANDS-ON with Therapist (usually ultrasound and some hands-on)
15 minutes- THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE (with an aide)
15 minutes- ICE/ STIM
This is based on billing codes..
So.. with that... the Therapist is treating you based on codes.. without the flexibility to give you exactly what you need..
Unfortunate... because there are so many wonderful, passionate, and excited PT's out there...
But as somebody who has been rehabilitating athletes and industry leaders my entire career.. I would be perplexed with how to maximize this mix and time allocation...
And.. since these clinics need to see volume in order to make money...
It is very difficult to spend the right amount of time to develop individualized programming...
I was speaking with one of my Coaches yesterday... and we talked about this situation..
People would rather use their insurance for care than go into their own pocket.. even if the result is not great.. because they feel it is "included" in their insurance..
Not being fully aware of the actual CO-PAY totals they are paying for 15-minutes of care...
SO.. what are your options?
Go to Insurance-Based PT for the first 8 weeks for acute care... then.. turn yourself over to a cash-pay entity that can truly get you back to your "pre-injury, pre-pain" state.. where TIME can be spent... a whole hour dedicated to you...
We have even had some clients do both at the same time!
Realizing.. the above time allocation (15-15-15-15) will only get you so far... meaning restoring basic range of motion and basic strength... By no means getting you "back to play"..
When we allow a system to determine treatment, rather than an assessment by a therapist.. we open ourselves up to exposure and "assembly line" type treatment..
I don't want that for you..
So awareness is key..
Awareness leads to seeking the right options for YOU!
I hope today's writing was simple and informative.. helping you to "find your way" to a customized, personalized solution towards pain-relief and functional restoration if you are hit with the "injury-bug"...
Yours In Health...

Awesome post that needs to be shared widely! I worked in a PT mill for some time and experienced just what you wrote. Started my own cash-based practice and put into action what we were taught as opposed to what we had to do to meet the demands of the ever increasing volume of patients. People are getting better quicker. People are happier with their experience. I enjoy my job so much more!!!
If you are a patient going to a clinic where 30minutes of a 60 minute treatment is passive treatment then there is probability you are not gonna to an affective therapy clinic. I only use that much passive modality for Acute phases of injury if necessary. After that initial acute phase no individual should be wasting their time to sit on ice and heat. They should be doing active modalities as research shows they help speed up the rehab process
Mind Blown!! I went through an “insurance cycle” of PT for IT/TFL problems and came away so frustrated. Now I know why! Love your daily info, Dana!
