Ageism: Prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group and especially the elderly.

So that is the definition from Webster's... but what if we stopped for a minute and realized that most of the that discrimination is self-inflicted.

What do I mean?

How many people do you meet, and when you discuss aging, they give you a list of the supposed to's... 

Meaning.. "I am getting older.. so I am going to shrink, lose strength, get weaker, have more doctors appointments, be less balanced, have a harder time walking, and will have more day to day pain."

This my friends is a sad case.

This morning I was reading a great guide/ book from The National Institute on Aging my mother gave me after cleaning out my grandfathers house.. 

The introduction was written by the Legendary John Glenn..

"At different stages of my life I have done different things. I make modifications to my advancing years by modifying and advancing my exercise regime".. 

Today's blog is about breaking the stereotypes.. 

If you think you can or you can't.. you are right.. 

So over the past several months I have been developing a program, called FOREVER FIT with Care-One Senior Living in New Jersey (video above).. designed to help seniors change their health game.

For this program, we are training the 70+ population, mostly with special health considerations to show the body can adapt at any age.

But the most important thing I have witnessed in my endeavor is:

IF YOU WAIT TO GET IN SHAPE YOU ARE DEAD.

If you think you can wait until "your legs go"to get in shape, you may be too late.

Your body often only gives you one shot. Once your body is compromised, it may be too late.

Same with cholesterol, blood pressure, and other so-called "minor" issues.. but how many years did you go without these issues? How long did it take for these issues to show? Did they just appear? Nope. 

Often times your choices for 30-40 years are what lead to these issues later in life..

I mean how many 20 year olds are on beta blockers, blood pressure, or cholesterol med cocktail daily?

Choices.

If you WAIT, you are LATE.

Now this isn't meant to be a lecture.. but I have seen to many people defer their health, and what should be the best years of their life, become the most challenging..

And I will leave you with this... 

I was speaking with my close friend yesterday, Dr. Serafini, who specializes in the aging population... and he told me this:

"Dana, I tell all my patients who are 70 and above, to eliminate stress in their life.. no stressful business, no risky investments, no risk. One heavy jolt of stress could cause an immediate stroke or heart attack.. They should be enjoying their life in a stress free manner from this point on.."

Makes sense... 

Your choices today create your benefits of tomorrow..
