Hey Team!
We are back... and it is official... Summer is here!
(at least in my mind, Memorial Day is day 1)....
And most importantly, for those who have served our Country... Thank you!
You are the true Champions!
Usually I take the Memorial Day Weekend off from work... and just focus on family, friends, and of course, my health...
With that said.. we are also surrounded by all kinds of foods at some of the parties we typically attend...
This weekend, I got a chance to visit with my brother and his family at a campground they were staying at.... and we got talking about "clean eating"...
He was telling me that he had put on a few pounds, and 2 of his 3 meals are salad with a balsamic dressing and grilled chicken...
Pretty healthy, right?
I agree... but something was obviously "not right"...
So after probing a bit more..we began talking about the "chicken"...
He takes off the skin.... but it turns out, it was "pre-cooked" chicken....
The kind you purchase from the store that was "pre-cooked"....
Which means... lots of sodium...
Which means.. holding water and looking very "full"....
This is where our conversation starts today...
It saddens me to hear people making "good" eating choices with positive intentions, but their bodies are not matching their choices...
YOU MUST BE FOCUSED ON YOUR SOURCES...
When we fuel our Athletes, we are very focused not just on WHAT they are eating, but where it is coming from....
We are also very focused on marinades, sauces, and any other hidden ingredients that could be hidden in the preparation process....
Think about when you go out to eat....
Most food is buttered, salted, and marinated... which is the triple sodium threat that will lead to high caloric intake, but dangerously high levels of sodium intake that can contribute to hyper-tension and fatigue....
As for sourcing, not all chicken is chicken.... not all beef is beef... meaning, they are not all equal...
If you can find free-range, grass-fed, organic meats, that is best...
It translates to the animal was raised "healthier" and those benefits are passed on to you....
These meats may be a little pricier, but the return on your system in regards to energy is also higher.... so.. for those high performers out there.. it is worth it...
So, as you head out to "Eat"...
Make sure you are asking the right questions and making the right preparation requests to the chef....
1. Dressing on the side... (oil/vinegar based is best)
2. No added salt...
3. Steamed vegetables...
4. No soy sauces.... or extra marinades...
5. Grilled/ Baked over fried......
These are simple requests for any chef.. but they will save you hundreds of calories....
And.. if you want to have some fun.. take a look at the calories next time you look at a restaurant menu... you will be mind blown....
Often times, one meal at a restaurant can have your caloric intake for the day....
Over the course of the next two weeks, we will be talking more nutrition... why?
Well, I want you to make this the 2.0 summer for yourself, your teams, and your families...
Better health = Better performance.
It starts with how you fuel....
Let's GO!
Chase Greatness...
