Hi Team...

Over the last few weeks you may have noticed a theme in my writing..

I have been speaking much more about health and vitality...

That is because so many that I coach are looking for more on this front- and, it is clear by how many companies and boards are meeting about burnout- that it is a necessary topic...

So, today I wanted to dive in just a bit deeper and talk about the mechanisms of stress, anxiety, and ultimately burnout.....

There are two parts to your nervous system...

Your sympathetic nervous system, or your flight/ fight system...

And your parasympathetic system, or your regulatory system...

These two systems keep the body in balance...

At times we need an adrenaline burst that is provided by the sympathetic to move us and prep us and amp us.....

Once this response happens, the parasympathetic system kicks in and brings us back to normal.....

Or, another way of looking at this is because of the tonality and strength of our vagus nerve, we never get SO charged up that this adrenaline burst becomes threatening to us....

I wanted to put this out there because today many live with an over-active sympathetic system....

They live in a space/ place where they are always experiencing an adrenal drip and it is fatiguing, dangerous, and you are depleting your body....

As a result, this is showing decreased parasympathetic activity, vagal tone, and an inability to keep the system in balance...

So how do we strengthen our parasympathetic nervous system and vagus nerve?

3-Ways...

  • Exercise....
  • Breathing....
  • Sleep and Rest....

All 3 are very important to your health, vitality, and longevity- and ultimately your performance.

Too often we look for short-cuts but I am here to tell you in this regard- there are no shortcuts...

Actually, for me, over this week I have logged 100 minutes of breathing so far- not just breathing, but detailed, tempo based breathing to downshift my sympathetic nervous system in favor of my parasympathetic...
