I know it has been a while since you have been to a book store...
When I go to a bookstore, one of the first sections I head towards is the Leadership section..
I have always been fascinated by this section and leadership in general.
I can remember being a kid and reading a book several years after 9/11 by Rudy Guiliani, a lifelong Yankee fan, titled Leadership.
This book was written about his time as Mayor of NYC- and how when he took over the city, well, it was a complete mess.
Vagrants on the streets.
The Big Apple was filthy..(like now :))
As I read through the book, he discussed HOW he began fixing the city..
He started by doing two things:
1. Painting Over All Visible Graffiti
2. Taking All Squeegee Men Off The Streets (guys would be all over the street trying to clean your windows)
These moves seem insignificant when considering cleaning up and getting the city back on track...
But, he felt it was these little things that would transform the city...
The above was followed by getting garbage off the streets and then, on top of that, spreading positive messaging about where the city is, where it is headed, and how it will be restored as the greatest city in the World.
You know what happened?
That is Leadership.
Taking the right action --> Getting a positive result.
The result of great leadership is making people feel settled because they know they are cared for...
The result of great leadership is helping people achieve the greatness they are capable of by first letting them know they are capable!
The result of great leadership is a sense and feeling of victory- because as a result of doing the right things, victory is the only option.
Great Leaders make their people feel safe, secure, comfortable yet challenged, and most importantly, they light a fire underneath these people by passing on infectious energy as it relates towards cause, mission, vision, and goals...
Great Leaders connect you to the outcomes you desire and help lay out a path to get you there!
They show you the way.... while you do the work.
That is leadership.
Leadership is a true change-agent.
I will also tell you what leadership is not...
A feel good book on how to lead others by being soft, being gentle, being weak.
Leadership takes guts and courage.
It takes empathy and needs to be humanized.
Great Leaders meet their people where they are- but never give up the mission, vision, goal, and dream...
They never feel bad for the people they lead- they instead choose to inspire these people to get out of their own way and charge towards their aspirations.
That is leadership.
Get tough. Get real.
