Hi Team....
Last night, I watched a classic movie... Rain Man....
You may remember the Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman classic..
What the movie illustrated was just how important "structure" is.... and how to the Rain Man character, without it, he was off kilter and out of sync...
Well, the same is true for all of us...
I remember years ago watching Derek Jeter at his locker just staring at the IPAD that had the weather channel app going...
I asked, "Jeet, what are you doing?"
To which he replied, "Tracking the storm, looking to see where there is a window."
This was a search for structure... a routine..
What he knew was that he had a pre-game routine and structure that he needed to follow in order to have a predictable result...
He had a plan, had a routine, and ultimately as a result had structure...
Raising kids... same thing.
Wake-up Time, Nap-Time, Bed-Time, Feeding Times.
All structure.
In school, we are brought up with structure with a schedule of classes and a bell that signifies the start and stop of each one of those classes. In 6-hours we get a lot done- including 5 subjects, physical exercise, and lunch...
Why do we get so much done?
Structure.
Now, here is the million dollar question...
Why do so many struggle to get as much done as an adult?
No structure.
It is that simple.
Many are not fully responsible for their schedule and outside of meetings really do not have much structure at all... this is why they love meetings...
They are an escape from an often poorly built, low yield schedule they assembled for themselves...
So, what do we do?
When I coach leaders and executives and athletes the first thing we do is ATTACK their schedule.
We work to define a clear start to the day and a clear stop to the day...
We then put meal times down... workout times down....
From there, we create 90-minute work blocks that have a theme.... we decide what goes into those blocks based on the theme of the block....
For sales pros, one block may be prospecting and another may be contract work...
For a CEO, one block may be reserved for executive meetings, another may be for "thinking time"....
For each it is different but it all needs a place....
When we add structure to our lives, even if we think we hate it or do not need it, our chances of winning goes up because our minds settle into a place of peace vs. chaos.....
That quiet mind is high yield...
Show me somebody who is bouncing around and all over the place and I will show you somebody with tremendous anxiety and a low production person...
Eventually they will crash- no doubt about it....
Give me a fast moving person that has structure- totally different story.
Now, let's begin to get our say structured and planned so we can be as high yield as possible...
