I remember years ago having a conversation with former Yankees lefty, Andy Pettitte.
We spoke heavily about 2-words: Character & Reputation
Two words that are very important to think about and invest in.
I tell you what I have been observing lately- low character which effects reputation.
Let me tell you one of my biggest pet peeves:
Not showing up and not letting others know about it.
Woody Allen once said: "90% of life is just showing up"
What if your success in anything you do came from just showing up?
Well, there is more to showing up.
You must show up on time- in sport, you must show up early.
You must show up ready- ready to learn and ready to make it happen.
You must show up prepared- ready for whatever comes your way.
You must show up.
When you show up on-time, ready, prepared, and ready to go- you show people a demonstration of your character and that builds your reputation.
Andy and I came to this conclusion:
"Your reputation builds itself when you lead with character and do what is right."
That is truth.
Think about how you make somebody else feel when you just do not show- and on top of that, you do not call, text, or email!
It reminds me of a classic message I wrote about in my book, Habits of Champion that was given to me by Derek Jeter...
"If people do not respect your time, they do not respect you."
I always say this- if you were being offered $10k to just show up on time- would you show up?
Most would say YES- I would be there.
They would be there for that same meeting they blow off if there was a reward.
This is just an example and something to tell yourself....
Tell yourself there is 10k in reputation and character if you just show up!
I put this message out there frequently because each day I see these character lapses wrapped around B.S. reasons for justified character lapses.
Everything you do matters.
Never forget that.
As a Coach, I have high expectations for all of those I work with and expect them to have the same level of expectation...
That expectation is striving for excellence in all that they do...
And when you commit to that- you have a great chance of having amazing character and your reputation will build accordingly.
This leads to more people believing in you and knowing that you do what you say- your word is oak.
There is something to be said for that!
Never forget it.
Stay strong in character and your life will change for the better over time!
Who doesn't want to work with or do business with somebody who has an unwavering word and has tremendous consistency!
