Earlier today I wrote a message on LinkedIn about the difference between Executives and Sports Coaches....
Unfortunately, today many executive are walking around paralyzed for many reasons...
Many feel handcuffed or like they are on high alert to not make a mistake and get an HR Violation....
But here is the deal.. you can not play offense and defense at the same time...
As leaders- it is critical that we think about the development of ourselves and our people- and attacking this with a clear plan.
That plan begins with one question...
Where is the deficit?
When we know where the deficit is we can then build a specific plan around that deficit.
This is exactly what we do with scouting reports in sports...
We know a players strengths and weaknessesand exactly where they need to improve in order to keep them moving forward and developing.
Because of this plan, growth is predictable.
We know what to expect if the plan is worked each day with focus and vigor.
Today, in the world of personal development and corporate development we see a much more generalized approach...
This works to open somebodies eyes- but is not development.
It is awareness- but not development.
Development is building complementary skills that build on top of one another- stacking in order to create and DEVELOP a more improvement person, ability, and way of thinking, behaving and acting.
This is WHY most youtube videos will not make you better.
This is WHY motivational videos and speakers do not make you better.
The key component to elevation of performance is development.
This comes from week over week learning and practice as it relates to specific skills and needs of an individual.
Think about when you were learning to do something...
It was the immersion and the failures in doing something over and over again that led to victory... not a one shot deal.
As you look to improve yourself, think about:
2. Daily Practice
3. Specific Skill Development
This means you must practice specific skills or skills that lead you to a result daily- and you must put the time in.
Development today is spoken of frequently- but it lacks the chops.
If you are somebody looking to improve- you must join, lead, or become part of a program that is sequential and skill based.
***If not, you will learn some good ideas- but you will not adapt and acquire skill.
This is where the rubber hits the road.
For those who lead people- the same rules apply. (immerse, daily practice, specific skill development)
When I Coach individuals and teams- I teach skills that are specific to a persons direct needs.
When I Coach teams specifically- I teach skills that are specific to the direct needs of the individuals- but also what is needed to achieve a specific outcome (in most cases, sales).
Do not generalize.
